Overview: This lodge is innovative, original and - without doubt - beautiful in its design, combined with a dramatic, isolated setting right on the edge of an escarpment in complete wilderness. It has an excellent reputation throughout Kenya and you will not be disappointed.    The building materials are sourced locally and in contrast to the hot and dry climate Shompole is cool, calm and refined. It has to be the most dramatic and creative lodge in Kenya and yet manages all this while also being sustainable.

Shompole is about 30 minutes flying time from Nairobi near Lake Magadi and Natron.  It is on a 35,000-acre core conservancy and surrounded by 140,000 acres of Shompole Group Ranch. It is built in a very remote area on the Nguruman Escarpment and is constructed using white quartz stone, thatch and fig wood.

The use of water, however, is what makes Shompole unique.  In each of the six rooms water flows through shallow channels in the floor to the private plunge pools.  The imagination and innovation that has been applied in the design of these open-sided rooms is incredible and you’ll marvel at their beauty and the breathtaking views. There is generous spacing between each of the six stylish rooms reinforcing the sense of isolation. The neutral colours and soft, understated furnishings add to the effect of simplistic luxury blended with safari chic.

The clever use of water extends to the main lounge and dining area where guests eat separately on various levels, looking out across the plains, soaking up the peace and tranquility.

Various safari-based activities are on offer including driving and walking safaris, cultural visits, canoeing, bush breakfasts, sundowners, trips to the lakes to see the Flamingoes and candle lit bush dinners. Wildlife is here but it is the beauty of the area that distinguishes this lodge.

The very experienced, knowledgeable and friendly guides will take care of you throughout your stay. We had a sundowner with our guide, Andrew and two other guests and the conversation, primarily led by Andrew was informed and fascinating, covering subjects like how the animals cope in a draught to the role of education and tourism in Kenya’s development.

Shompole is the perfect place for people who want to either start or finish their Kenya experience in a relaxing and stylish fashion and in a very beautiful environment.

Sustainable Rating: 5star

As community based conservation initiative, Shompole’s raison d’être is to acknowledge the value of conserving wildlife and the environment and ensure the actual community on the ground is able to benefit from their sustainable use.  Understands the need to have an internationally successful product to achieve this goal.
