About a 30-minute plane journey South West of Nairobi. Shompole Lodge is situated near Lake Natron on the edge of the Nguruman Escarpment overlooking the Great Rift Valley. Because Lake Natron lies predominantly in Tanzania, the nearby Lake Magadi is perhaps the best reference point for the lodge on a map.
Lake Magadi, which is Kenya’s southernmost lake in the Rift valley, lies in a catchment of faulted volcanic rocks and in the dry season is covered by soda making for an extraordinary visual experience. It is well known for its wading birds including flamingoes.
The lodge is located in the nearby Shompole Group Ranch, which spans 140,000 acres of Kenya’s grasslands and savannahs. It provides a dispersal area for wildlife and a buffer zone for human settlement and has acted as a preserve for the local environment.
