Overview: Exclusivity, accommodation and setting all distinguish Hippo Point as spectacular.  Hippo Point House is 1930’s Elizabethan colonial grandeur and The Tower, which is on the same property, has imagination and wonderfully stylistic quirk. The huge acacia trees, the magical lake, the game you feel comfortable walking amongst, the surrounding hills, the ever-changing light and the open space generate an amazing calm and peace.  The combination of the amazing accommodation, service and the natural beauty of Hippo Point generates a sense of privilege about being able to stay here.

Hippo Point sits between Lake Naivasha and the smaller, prettier Lake Oloidien just next to it. Ever since visiting this area in the early 90’s we’ve considered it to be an outstandingly beautiful and peaceful place.  The colours, wildlife, lakes and surrounding hills are a magical combination.

As soon as you enter the grounds and start the long and dusty drive through the huge acacia trees and scattered game, passing the lake to your right, you gain the sense that you are about to come across something very special.  And it doesn’t disappoint. This magnificent 1930's Elizabethan house, which was restored to modern standards in 1998, is a true reflection of English colonial grandeur.

It has seven double bedrooms with large bathtubs, lovely old wooden floors and a host of other rooms you’d expect from a house of this standing.  Surrounding the house you will find traditional English gardens with green lawns and flowerbeds, which have a cooling, calming effect. However much you get drawn into this world, you can never escape the much dryer, harsher but arguably more beautiful natural surroundings, dominated by the huge acacia trees.  The broken views of the flamingo edged lake, constant sightings of the resident giraffe, zebras, gazelle and hippo combine with the sounds, colours and peace of the place to leave you in no doubt as to how special it is here.

The word ‘unique’ may be overused but it certainly isn’t when it comes to describing the slightly bizarre nine storey Tower, which sits down by the lake’s edge and is slightly reminiscent of a lighthouse.  It is predominantly made up from a lounge and deck area at the lower level and then four double rooms above.  At the very top, accessed via a permanent ladder, is an eerie, which offers stunning views over the lake.   It’s hard to argue with the owner’s view that “no luxury or detail has been overlooked to create a tranquil haven and a truly inspiring aesthetic experience.”

Great use is made of the surroundings when it comes to turning any meal into an event, be it breakfasts served under the beautiful acacias, English tea on the lawns, moonlit lakeside barbecues or intimate silver-serviced candle lit dinners.

In terms of activities, Hippo Point is home to a great variety of birds and animals and your hosts can organise anything from walks, local excursions to nearby lakes, safaris to nearby parks, boating, or mountain climbing, to name but a few.

An ideal place for a family or a group of friends.

Sustainable Rating: 3star
